The Jewish in Morocco
Dr. Bendaoud Abderrahim
The Jewish presence in Morocco goes back to long and forgotten
periods. “Jews are historically the first group of
non-Berber to come to Morocco and they are still living here until today”. The Jewish community still
maintains its identity and it was integrated into the Moroccan society because
of its peaceful coexistence with all components of the society.
Jews have spread throughout
all Morocco, settling in different geographical regions, due to political,
religious and ideological considerations and factors. Since 1948 and 1961,
waves of Jewish immigrants came to Morocco and poured into small villages. Thus,
many of them settled in a group of neighbourhoods Called “Mellah”.
While this component of the national Jewish identities has proven its presence two thousand years ago at the level of Moroccan culture. The Jewish heritage has remained unknown to the coming generation of Moroccans, including some of the university’s researches. As a result, it was necessary to introduce this heritage and know the reality of the Jewish community, its history and civilization, and accordingly we will try in this article to approach the existence of Hebrew and Jewish studies at the Moroccan Universities, as we will shed lights on some of the efforts made by researchers in order to maintain this heritage.
